I'm not Swedish. My best friend is, and I'm represented across the Nordic region by MySpeaker Sweden and A-Speakers, so I've had to learn the culture on its own terms rather than assume it.

Understanding that culture matters more here than in most markets I work in. Swedish audiences don't respond to hype. They respond to substance delivered with restraint, what Swedes call lagom, the right amount, not too much. That's a real constraint on how a keynote has to land, and it's one I take seriously when I prepare for a Swedish stage.

One trip captures it well. I once left a creativity retreat on a small island off the Swedish coast, rowed to catch a train, and gave a keynote to a cohort of entrepreneurs in Stockholm before flying home to Portugal that same day.

The engagement was booked through MySpeaker. My host was my friend Fredrik Haren, The Creativity Explorer, and the audience was an Antler entrepreneur cohort.

It was my first in Sweden, but I've been back to speak for iconic Swedish companies like Sandvik.
