Are you aware that you have a choice in the way that you perceive the world?
A very good friend just pointed out that I can ‘go negative’ really easily; I understood what he meant however compared to my upbringing in England I am a veritable ray of sunshine. My friend is an American and is really positive and so compared to him I am relatively more dark. This got us talking about the difference between lableling something positve or negative – an either or situation versus light and dark which is a continuum.
Since this conversation I have been noticing how I ‘light’ my experiences, just like a film director and I want to share this exercise with you so that you too can gain contol of your life.
Without judgment, notice the significant things happening in you life right now – work, relationship, kids, money etc. Now with each situation go into the control box of your mind and dim how you represent this to yourself. It is likely that you feel less enjoyment, motivation and engagement. Now if you can dim the experience, it stands to reason that you can brighten it – so do that now pick something significant and brighten your representation and therefore you thoughts and feelings about that situation.
Did you do that? If not STOP reading, go back and do the exercise.
Funny thing is I learned how to do this years ago when I learnend Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) but forgot that we can change our settings. In 2012 I faced some really tough times and experienced things that are understandably dark, like the death of my father from cancer – but these things have passed and it’s time to change the settings. How about you? Do you need to look at your present and your future and turn up the brightness?
Because, as was sung by Timbuk3 in 1986, “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!”
