“Leadership is influence.” – John C. Maxwell
Unfortunately it is not always as simple as just asking; often we must develop a strategy on how to ask to increase our chance of getting a “yes”.
Leaders, manager, marketer, sales person, trainer, coach or parent, your effectiveness is directly correlated to your ability to influence. It is a truism that we are paid not so much for what we do but what we influence others to do. We can develop our influence upwards, downwards and laterally.
Developing Influence with Integrity
Influence starts with self-leadership because we must first influence ourselves before we can influence others. We must then consider who we want to influence, our boss, our board, our peers, our employees, or our customers. It should go without saying that you must influence with integrity and you must behave ethically as you will be altering people’s beliefs and perceptions, therefore altering their actions.
SLI can customize a 1 or 2 day program on developing influence for your organization and we can also provide mobile learning options. Typical content includes:
- Influence, persuasion or manipulation?
- Aristotle on influence – the 3 level approach
- The confidence to influence
- Identifying emotional triggers
- Understanding external forces
- Listening for values
- Pacing and leading thoughts and feelings
- Influence strategies
The developing influence program is highly interactive, with experiential learning and role plays. Participants identify a current influence challenge and leave the program with a strategy to address it.
