Values
- Values represent what is important to us.
- Values consciously or unconsciously drive our behaviours.
- Our actions or behaviours create our results.
Value words like trust, responsibility, respect, loyalty, learning, integrity, fairness, creativity and accountability are 'abstractions' and so mean different thing to different people in different contexts.
The key to bringing values to life is to 'drill down' and find out how that value will be lived in a specific situation.
Company Values
Companies set values to act as a compass for the direction their business should take and how their people will behave on the journey.
“Visionary companies who hold ‘core values’ outperform and outlast those that don’t” – Jim Collins in Built to Last.
Successful organisations today need to create a purposeful sense of community in order to attract the best employees and then engage them in building their business. To do this they need to decide on the values which will create the desired working environment and produce the behaviours that will generate the results required.
Companies work best when each of their values support each other, and the values are aligned with specific behaviours that all the stakeholders understand and agree to.
How Self Leadership develops organisational values
Self Leadership International can work with your organisation to develop a set of coherent values or bring to life your existing values.
The process starts with senior management, who are facilitated through a process of connecting the abstract principles of a value to an observable behaviour they would like to see demonstrated in their organisation. This process eliminates 'motherhood statements' and make the values real and tangible. Once values are developed or brought to life in this way it creates a culture where people know what to do without being told.
Once senior management have agreed on the values and are committed to 'walk the talk', the values can be launched to the organisation through focus groups, workshops that create buy-in to the new values.
Policies and procedures can then be reviewed and aligned with the value system and agreed behaviours.
