Background to Personality Tests

Measuring personality (psychometrics) dates back to the early Greeks but it is only very recently that psychologists and management theorists have agreed on what can be measured and it's effect in the workplace.

There are many Psychometric and Personality Tests available in the marketplace and it can be difficult to make a decision as to which one to use.

The key distinction to consider is whether the psychometric instrument (test) measure a' type' or a 'trait'.

With a type indicator you are either/or, for example in Myers Briggs (MBTI) you are either Extrovert or Introvert. With at trait profiling tool you can be anywhere on a scale (standard deviation) and so the Personality Factor being measured will probably only be visible if your sore <3 or >7 on the scale. Type indicators such as MBTI, which has been around since the WWII, and the simpler DISC remain very popular in organisations and do provide useful information. Other popular personality tests measure; conflict handling (Thomas Killman model), team dynamics (Belbin) and learning styles (Kolb).

Modern Management Psychometric Tests

Facet5Modern Psychologists and Management Consultants now widely accept five factors (traits)as the fundamental building blocks of personality. These ‘Big 5’ consistently emerge from research around the world (including Costa & McCrae 1976 and Brand 1984)as the irreducible minimum needed to give a comprehensive description of a person’s personality.

We use and recommend to our clients a 'Big 5' psychometric (personality) test known as Facet5. Facet5 measures the five personality factors precisely and quickly to give the most accurate and easily applied portrait of individual differences in behaviour. Facet5 also allows a detailed breakdown of these five factors into 13 sub-factors (facets) to explore subtleties of behaviour at an individual level.

The 5 factors (UK labels) are Will, Control, Affection, Energy and Emotionality. There are 13 sub factors and these are Determination, Confrontation, Independence, Discipline, Responsibility, Altruism, Support, Trust, Enthusiasm, Sociability, Adaptability, Anxiety and Apprehension.

Using the Facet5, managers, recruiters, trainers and coaches can understand the differences between people and design work, learning and development plans to suit individuals. In addition understand the Big 5 factors can help managers and consultants to create high performing teams and winning cultures.
