Firstly, welcome to new readers from the National Accountants Convention (KL), to whom I delivered the plenary session titled, 'Creating a New Future'.

For our regular readers you will know that each month I write an article (click here for previous issues) with the intention of adding value to your business, your work or your relationships; this month however I want to outright advertise a public program/event we have created. Over the last year I have run several in-house programs to develop managers' communication and leadership skills. My experience parallels that of Charan, Drotter and Noel who wrote the book 'The Leadership Pipeline' - that new managers have a challenge transitioning from self-leadership to leading others.

Companies promote based on individual performance and then hope that the competent individual will lead a group to team performance. The reality is that many managers struggle to acquire the communication, problem solving and emotional intelligence skills required to achieve this result.

Leadership Generator is a Self Leadership International workshop with a difference, designed as a creative way to develop a leadership pipeline.

The way it works is that companies send one or more teams of five managers. The managers do not need to be from the same department or business unit, just from the same company.

Only ten teams are allowed in each run of Leadership Generator. Each team will compete and collaborate with the other nine, creating a highly charged learning environment.

Leadership Generator starts with an evening get together where the teams get to get to know each other over dinner and the stage is set with the 'Leadership Generator Challenge'. The challenge is in the form of a multi-faceted corporate problem that each team will solve in their own unique way.

During the next two-days teams are exposed to workshops and group coaching by Self Leadership International's team of experienced trainers. Each team will also have time to work on their own solution to the 'Leadership Generator Challenge'.

The finale is a presentation in the form of demonstration or role play by each team in front of the judging panel. The best presentation wins the trophy but each team comes away a winner in terms of the experience and the skills they have learned.

Leadership Generator is ideal for:

  • Managers with high technical competency but new to managing people
    Companies who want to accelerate their leadership development
  • More experienced managers who wish to develop their leadership skills
