Creating Transformational Change
How do we create change that is lasting and transformational? Whether you are wanting to change a personal habit, change a process in a company or change the direction of a country, it is necessary to understand the psychology of change.
Newton's first law of physics tells us that a body remains stationary or in constant motion unless acted on by an external force. With change this force is the energy of motivation. Before change can occur, there must exist enough motivation to overcome inertia. Motivation can be towards what we want or away from what we don't want. It is the job of the change agent (coach) to bring awareness to, and amplify the motivation.
Even when there is motivation, people don't change because their existing mindset holds them in place. By stepping back (going 'meta') and exploring these 'frames of mind' it is possible to make a decision to reject the old and adopt a new mindset that will support the desired new behaviours.
It is the meta-coaches role to facilitate the client's decision and adoption of new frames of mind and co-create behaviours that will manifest the desired change.
New behaviours are often tentative, awkward as we develop conscious competence, it is therefore necessary to receive plenty of reinforcement for the new behaviour.
Once new behaviours are being exhibited and supported it is then possible to test them for further improvement and so the whole process starts again.
In summary the steps for creating permanent transformational change are:
- Motivation
- Decision
- New mindset
- Reinforcement of new behaviours
- Testing the new behaviours for further improvement
